A wave of rotten kebab meat recently rolled over Europe. In Austria, too, 27 people fell ill with salmonella poisoning, and there was even one death. Against this background, the City of Vienna task force, led by the Emergency Measures Group, carried out random checks at food stands in the districts of Favoriten, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and Ottakring last Wednesday

“Food stalls enrich Vienna’s culinary diversity. Nevertheless, after numerous cases of salmonella infections and one death, it must be ensured that the consumption of food in food stalls does not pose a danger to consumers,” emphasized Walter Hillerer, head of the City of Vienna task force and the immediate measures group .
Police operation at control
Aspects such as the proper storage of food, the cleanliness of the premises, the registration of employees with the ÖGK and compliance with other legal requirements were checked. In addition, 59 random food samples were taken by MA. These samples are currently being examined by the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES).
Apparently not all companies agreed with this: Police support was required in one restaurant.
Summary of the action:
A total of 19 snack stands were checked, and food samples were taken from eight of them. There were 13 board mandates due to poor hygiene, one report under the Foreigners Employment Act, four further investigations into wage and social dumping, seven reports under the Allergen Ordinance and three violations of the General Social Insurance Act (ASVG).
Operations team leader Hillerer was satisfied with the course of the campaign and assured that further checks will be carried out in the future. Due to the incidents of the last few weeks and the resulting loss of trust, snack bar operators are currently struggling with massive losses in sales. Actions of this kind would offer a good opportunity to restore public confidence.
