Vienna summer night concert in front of 3,000 spectators

Vienna / Berlin (MH) – The traditional summer night concert of the Vienna Philharmonic will take place in front of 3,000 spectators this year. That is the officially approved number, the orchestra announced on Monday. The places in front of Schönbrunn Palace were mainly given to people “who were and still are at the forefront of the pandemic in the medical field and also in elementary education”.

The open-air event on June 18 can be seen live on the Internet and on television with a time delay. Works by Bernstein, Verdi, Rachmaninov, Sibelius, Elgar, Debussy and Holst will be performed under the baton of Daniel Harding, who is making his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic. The soloist is the pianist Igor Levit. The motto of the concert is “Wanderlust”.

The Vienna Philharmonic’s Summer Night Concert has attracted around 100,000 visitors in each of the last few years. In 2019, the event was broadcast in more than 80 countries, some live. Last year the concert was postponed from May to September. There was no free entry. Only a small number of personalized invitations were given to people who made the concert possible.
