On Sunday, “red” Vienna lived up to its reputation. In the federal capital, the SPÖ was not only able to defend first place, but even achieved a plus.

The FPÖ took second place after its fall in 2019, but follows at a respectable distance. Turquoise-Green also lost in Vienna. For the NEOS, which is the junior partner in the government in Vienna, there was only a very thin increase. They were behind the Greens on Sunday.

According to the preliminary final result, the SPÖ achieved 29.9 percent, an increase of 2.8 percentage points compared to 2019. The FPÖ can look forward to an increase of 8.3 percentage points, but is still significantly behind at 21.2 percent the Reds and was already stronger in the National Council elections in 1999 and 2017. The ÖVP came in at 17.6 percent (minus 7 percentage points), the Greens at 12 percent (minus 8.7 percentage points). The NEOS achieved 11 percent, a small increase of 1.2 percentage points.

National Council election: Surprise in the results for the small parties

The results for the small parties can certainly be seen as a surprise. The Beer Party, which had long been given a lot of credit in surveys regarding Vienna, had to be content with 2.1 percent. The KPÖ got 3.7 percent.

When you look at the districts, it is clear where the social democrats were able to succeed: in the former green strongholds. In 2019, the eco-party was at the top of the podium in the many inner districts as well as in Hernals and Währing. That’s history, the SPÖ made its biggest gains in these regions. It was significantly more than 10 percentage points in new buildings, for example, where the 30 percent mark was just exceeded.

The FPÖ had little chance in these districts; as usual, it was strong in the regional districts, where the SPÖ had to accept slight losses in some cases. In one district, the FPÖ was even able to achieve first place: in the home of Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ), of all places, the Blues trumped the SPÖ, even if the race was close. According to the preliminary final result, the FPÖ got 30.2 percent (plus 11.4 percentage points), the SPÖ 29.5 percent (minus 0.7 percentage points). The postal votes that have not yet been counted could still bring changes here.

The SPÖ retained the upper hand in these districts of Vienna

In other large districts, the SPÖ retained the upper hand, for example in Simmering – where the Blues have already been the district leader – and in Favoriten, where cases of knife crime recently caused a stir. The FPÖ was relatively close on the heels of the SPÖ here. In Favoriten, for example, the SPÖ got 33.2 percent, which meant a loss of 3.6 percentage points. The FPÖ gained 27.8 percent – an increase of more than 10 percentage points.

It was a bitter defeat for the Greens in Vienna, where they had co-governed for ten years. They could no longer conquer any district. They once again achieved their best result in Vienna-Neubau. The 22.1 percent there can be seen as a crash. Because the minus in the 7th district was 15.4 percentage points.

While the Greens are no longer the strongest party in any district, the ÖVP remained ahead in its strongholds Innere Stadt, Döbling and Hietzing, even if there were losses there as in all districts. In the first district, the People’s Party got just under 31 percent (minus 5.6 percentage points), which was also the turquoise highlight of the evening. The NEOS, which made gains in all districts, also achieved their best result in the city, where a pink vote share of 18.9 percent was reported.

The federal capital itself is likely to come into focus relatively quickly. Because in Vienna, which is governed by red and pink, the local council will be elected in a year. To date, there have only been a few predictions about this election, which is also likely to change soon. In 2020, the SPÖ had a slight decline of just under 42 percent, while the Greens and NEOS gained. The Blues fell to just under 8 percent of the vote, the ÖVP doubled to more than 20 percent.
