Vienna, the capital of Austria, has once again been recognized as the most livable city in the world, according to the latest study by the “Economist” analyst group “Economist Intelligence Unit” (EIU).

When creating the quality of life index, EIU evaluated 173 cities from around the world according to several important factors, including health care, education opportunities, infrastructure and environment.

Vienna has ranked first on this list several times, and again this year, the Austrian capital’s reliable infrastructure, excellent cultural and entertainment life, impeccable education and health care services secured it first place. However, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is not far behind Vienna, which is ranked second. In third and fourth place are the Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney, which had slipped down the list in recent years.

Several Canadian cities are also ranked in the top ten. Vancouver took fifth place, Calgary seventh, and Toronto ninth. On the other hand, the Swiss city of Zurich took the sixth place, while Geneva shares the seventh place with Calgary. The first ten is completed by the Japanese city of Osaka.

The representative of the EIU stated that the lifting of the restrictions related to Covid-19 has generally had a positive impact on life in cities. Children have returned to school and education has become stronger, with significant reductions in the burden on hospitals and health care systems, and several notable improvements in cities across developing Asia and the Middle East.

“As the world’s political and economic axis continues to shift eastward, we expect cities in these regions to slowly move up our liveability rankings,” said an EIU spokesperson.

Although Europe is strongly represented at the top of the list, European destinations also dominate among the cities that experienced the biggest drop in the ranking.

Both London, the capital of the United Kingdom, and Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, have experienced a decline in the rating. London fell by 12 places to 46th place, and Stockholm by 22 places to 43rd place. On the other hand, the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh, which entered this list for the first time in 2022 and took the 35th place, has slipped to the 58th place this year.

“None of these cities have seen particularly sharp declines in index scores, but they have not been able to make the same gains as many other cities, particularly Asian cities,” the report said.

The average score of the index in 172 cities (excluding Kyiv in Ukraine) has reached 76.2 points out of 100, which is the highest score in 15 years. The study concluded that health care indicators have improved the most, but education, culture and entertainment, as well as infrastructure indicators are also higher. However, stability has seen a minimal decline due to “many urban riots amid the cost of living crisis, as well as an increase in crime”.

Of the five categories included in the index, only stability has declined, and the EIU predicts that this indicator will not recover as quickly as public order tensions and economic woes have fueled crime in some cities.

Among US cities, Honolulu, the largest city in Hawaii, took the highest place. It ranked 25th.

Algiers, Tripoli and Damascus are recognized as the most unsuitable cities for living. The Syrian capital Damascus, consistently one of the lowest rated cities in this study, has not seen any improvement in its quality of life indicators.

On the other hand, the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, which was not included in the 2022 list due to the repeated Russian invasion, fell to the bottom of the list this year as a direct result of the war and now ranks among the ten least livable cities in the world.

“The war in Ukraine and the resulting economic and political disruptions are affecting liveability in many European cities. Not surprisingly, this is most felt in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv,” the report said.
