Vienna Slips in Global Quality of Living Ranking, Citing Housing Crunch
Vienna has slipped one spot in the latest Mercer Quality of Living Ranking, placing behind Zurich and Geneva. While the Austrian capital offers excellent internet access, a decline in rental properties suitable for international assignees has impacted its standing, according to Mercer, the global consulting company behind the annual survey.
Zurich claimed the top spot this year, praised for its exceptional public services, low crime rate, vibrant cultural scene, and commitment to sustainability. The Swiss city’s allure extends to its ideal location for international workers, despite being known as one of the world’s most expensive cities.
“"Vienna has lost a position in our ranking compared to the previous year. This can be attributed to the decline in the availability of rental properties suitable for international assignees,” said Markus Kurth, Head of the Global Mobility Practice in Germany & Austria at Mercer. However, it was possible for Vienna to score points when it came to access to internet connections."
Copenhagen maintained its position in fourth place, with Auckland vying for fifth.
The Mercer Quality of Living Ranking evaluates cities globally based on how well they meet the daily needs of expatriates and their families. The ranking considers a range of factors, including political and social environments, medical and health aspects, schools and education, public services, transportation, and the environment.
