Vienna is gearing up for one of the most glamorous events of the year – the Opera Ball tonight. Long hours of hard work are behind the success of the 56th Traditional Ball at the Vienna State Opera. More than 30 hours of work are needed to give the opera the appearance of a ballroom. This year, over 7,000 guests are expected to enjoy the ball season in the Austrian capital.
The ball tradition began in the 19th century at the then Royal Opera of Franz Joseph the First, reported BNT. Since 1935, the ball has been held on the last Thursday of the carnival season before the beginning of the Easter Lent according to the Catholic calendar. Every year the event attracts between 5,000 and 12,000 visitors, half of them from abroad.
The entrance ticket costs 230 euros, and the prices of the boxes vary between 8,500 and 17,000 euros. By tradition, the Viennese ball officially opens with the dance of the debutantes.
