Ukraine Prize of Appreciation and Young Journalist Prize also awarded
Vienna (OTS/RK) – On March 29, 2022, the Vienna Female Journalists’ Prize was awarded in the Vienna City Hall. This year the award was under the patronage of Deputy Mayor and Women’s City Councilor Kathrin Gaál and City Councilor for Economic Affairs Peter Hanke. Since the award ceremony had to be paused due to corona, several prize winners were chosen at this year’s ceremony: Silvana Meixner from ORF received the Vienna Journalist Prize 2021 and Manuela Raidl from PULS 24 was awarded the Journalist Prize 2022. The prize, which is worth EUR 5,000 each, was donated by Wien Holding and the Styria Media Group. The Young Journalist Award 2021 went to Eja Kapeller from Dossier, Christina Pausackl from the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit” was honored as Young Journalist 2022. Due to current events, the Ukraine Prize for Supporting Ukrainian Journalists was also awarded this year. The prize money of 5,000 euros was donated by Wien Holding.
Awarded Ukraine Appreciation Prize
A very special prize was awarded at the beginning of the evening: The Ukraine Prize is intended to support Ukrainian journalists in their difficult and dangerous work. The award was accepted by the Ukrainian writer, journalist and Bachmann Prize winner Tanja Maljartschuk on behalf of the Ukrainian journalist Vira Kuryko. The prize, worth EUR 5,000, was donated by Wien Holding.
Making quality journalism by women visible
The aim of the Vienna Female Journalists’ Prize is to bring women to the front of the curtain and to honor the great achievements of Austrian female journalists.
“The Vienna Journalist Award is about bringing women in front of the curtain. The award makes visible the valuable work journalists do every day in the editorial offices and honors women who achieve outstanding things in the media sector. The work of the two award-winning journalists Silvana Meixner and Manuela Raidl is characterized by objectivity, care, empathy and accuracy. It is particularly important that women – especially in journalism – support and network one another. The journalist prize contributes to this. With this year’s Ukraine award, we are paying tribute to the tireless efforts of women journalists in Ukraine,” said Deputy Mayor and Women’s City Councilor Kathrin Gaál.
“The Vienna Female Journalist Award sets an example for more equality, which we at Wien Holding are happy to support. I am pleased that Silvana Meixner is a journalist who stands for media integration and good cooperation. With the Ukraine award, we also want to express our appreciation for those journalists who are currently continuing their reporting despite the dangerous situation in Ukraine,” says Wien Holding Managing Director Sigrid Oblak.
Silvana Meixner – Winner of the Vienna Journalist Award 2021
Silvana Meixner has been working for ORF since 1988. Since 2007 she has directed the program “Heimat, Fremd Heimat”, which reports on people with a migration background – often critically, but always respectfully and on an equal footing. The show has also addressed sensitive and women’s political issues for many years, long before the mainstream media focused on them. In addition, she was involved in setting up the minority editorial team and influenced generations of migrants who took their first professional steps here. Thanks to their outstanding commitment, many young people have been won over to journalism.
“Silvana Meixner supports minorities and ethnic groups. What characterizes her is that she never puts herself in the foreground. She is always interested in the matter. With Silvana Meixner, we want to put a journalist in front of the curtain who has become a symbol of media integration in Austria,” said the media women’s network in its jury statement.
The Vienna Female Journalist Award for Silvana Meixner, which is worth EUR 5,000, was donated by Wien Holding.
Manuela Raidl – Winner of the Vienna Journalist Award 2022
Manuela Raidl is chief reporter for PULS 24 News and processes her insights into reports, comments and analyses. She attaches particular importance to making politics tangible and bringing it closer to the people. Her narrative style is characterized by irony – and her sharp tongue.
“Manuela Raidl is characterized by knowledge, precision and intellectuality. The summer talks that the political expert held with all party leaders were characterized by background knowledge. Raidl has been showing for years how to explain complex relationships in a simple way and thus make them accessible,” said the media women’s network in its jury statement.
The Vienna journalist prize for Manuela Raidl, which is worth 5,000 euros, was donated by the Styria Media Group.
The two winners of the Vienna Journalist Award also received a statue by the artist Dejana Kabiljo, which was made available by the Vienna Business Agency and made exclusively for the award winners.
Young female journalist prizes 2021 and 2022 awarded
In addition to the Vienna Female Journalists’ Prize, the Young Female Journalists’ Prize was also awarded again. The prize, which is worth 1,000 euros, is awarded by the Frauennetzwerk Medien jointly with the private broadcaster Puls 4.
The winner for 2021 is Eja Kapeller from Dossier, who was honored for her meticulous research and clear perspective, even on emotionally challenging topics.
The Young Female Journalist Award 2022 went to Christina Pausackl, who works for the weekly newspaper “Die Zeit”, among other things. She was honored for her consistent feminist and socio-political work and for the clarity of her reporting.
