In the 2023-24 season, Vidi, which is in ninth place after seven rounds in NB I, has so far only managed to win against Mezőkövesd, achieved two draws and suffered four defeats. Last week in the second round of the Hungarian Cup was eliminated against the third division ESMTKafter that the sports director Roland Juhász resigned, but the coach, Bartosz Grzelak, remained in place.

Grzelak’s scale
With the Swedish specialist of Polish origin who arrived in March, sweating blood last season, Vidi fought to stay in the team in the last round. Grzelak’s match/point average is 0.89, Fehérvár only won three out of 18 games under his leadership. Before the current coach, Huszti Szabolcs managed 13 games, Michael Boris 32, Imre Szabics 34, Gábor Márton 28, Joan Carrillo managed Videoton in 27 games, more or less, but with more success than Grzelak. The last golden era of the club’s history was attributed to Marko Nikolics. With the Serbian coach, he won the league title in 2018 and Vidi reached the group stage of the Europa League.
With Nikolic, Vidi was in the El group circuit a few years ago
If Csaba Máté’s possible role in Fehérvár is nothing more than a figment of the imagination (although it is very difficult to imagine what Dejan Sztankovics’ predecessor was doing at the Mol Aréna Sósto when Fradi will play Vidi on November 11, but let’s really put aside the conspiracy theories …), then the same can be said for the Europa League group match against Chelsea. However, the latter actually happened, on December 13, 2018, Nikolic’s team played a 2-2 draw against Chelsea in its temporary home at the time, the Groupama Arena. From the team at that time, Attila Fiola, a member of the national team, remains the only decisive player in today’s squad. On the occasion of the Hungarian Cup defeat against ESMTK, six of the starting team (Balázs Tóth, Csaba Spandler, Franck Bambock, Áron Csongvai, Bence Gergényi, Mamoudou Karamoko) also have fresh 2023 certificates, as well as substitutes Deybi Flores, Zsolt Kalmár and Mátyás Katona .
It is a phenomenon that is difficult to interpret, that despite the withdrawal of the main sponsor Mol, there are resources for acquiring promising players, but the team building does not work to such an extent that the majority of these footballers are currently performing below their abilities.
Staying in is the goal
Owner István Garancsi announced significant cost reductions in the summer and clearly stated the goals. “We can’t dream about the championship title and the podium. Sports director Roland Juhász must lay the foundations of a rejuvenated team that is lovable to the fans and stays in the top flight so that we don’t have to worry about the last round again.”
Juhász has since left. Garancsi will not throw in the towel, and Grzelak will not retire from his job on Csíkvári út either.
