Typhoon Yagi made landfall in northern Vietnam on Saturday, where authorities have evacuated thousands of people due to the risk that the natural phenomenon could cause flooding, as has happened in China and the Philippines.
Vietnam’s Meteorological Department said on social media that the eye of the typhoon passed over Bach Long Vi Island, about 100 kilometers from the mainland, and finally hit the city of Haiphong two hours later.
Yagi, the most powerful typhoon to hit Asia this year, brought heavy rain and sustained winds of 118 kilometres per hour (73 mph) to Vietnam, with maximum gusts of up to 149 kilometres per hour (92 mph), the Vietnamese agency said.
Local authorities have evacuated some 50,000 people and nearly half a million soldiers have been mobilised to help with emergency relief efforts, while four airports – including Hanoi’s – remain suspended and more than 300 flights have been cancelled.
On its way to Vietnam, the typhoon crossed the Chinese island province of Hainan on Friday, causing at least two deaths and injuring 92 people, and leaving more than 1.5 million homes without electricity the day before.
Earlier this week, when it was a strong tropical storm, Yagi crossed the northern Philippine island of Luzon, where Manila is located. Emergency teams there reported 20 dead, 26 missing and 18 injured in their update today.
