The El Prat airport, in Barcelona, woke up this Monday with flooding and leaks in many of its facilities due to the rain storm that is hitting the region of the Catalan capital.
There are widespread delays and 15 flights have already had to be diverted, reported the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente.
The minister has also reported that a crisis committee has been established to “monitor the impact of the strong storms” and that the most affected areas are terminal 1 and the parking lot.
The authorities ask the citizens of the Baix Llobregat region, where this airport is located, to take extreme precautions, avoid movements that are not expressly necessary and stay away from ravines, rivers and other channels.
More than 15 flights diverted from Barcelona due to storm
«Crisis committee has been established at the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport to monitor the impact of the strong storms that are taking place today at the Barcelona airport. Some areas of the terminals are being affected with leaks, mainly in the T1 public area and parking. So far, 15 DEVIATIONS have been recorded,” wrote the Minister of Transport of Spain, Óscar Puente, in X.
The commuter train service in Catalonia was cancelled, the official added in another publication on his X account.
Aena, for its part, confirmed the information on the same platform, raising the number of diverted flights to 17 until shortly before noon on Monday, November 3.
Furthermore, in an even more sensitive notice for the population, Civil Protection of Catalonia has asked parents not to pick up their children from schools and has asked employees not to leave their jobs.
In a message on the networks, Civil Protection asks to avoid mobility, while remembering that “schools are a safe place.” Workers, for their part, are asked to remain in their workplaces and not leave them until weather conditions improve.
The regions of Maresme, Western Vallès, Eastern Vallès, Baix Llobregat, Garraf and Barcelonès are on maximum alert for water accumulation and torrential rain on Monday.
These warnings are known while recovery efforts continue after the historic and devastating floods suffered in the province of Valencia and surrounding areas.
