Following the Venezuelan election, in which President Nicolás Maduro, who has been in power for 25 years, emerged victorious, the country’s community, dissatisfied with the result, has risen up in protests denouncing electoral fraud, among which one of the most significant has been the toppling of the statue of the late dictator Hugo Chávez.
The images that show the community in flames show the group gathered in the state of Falcón where the statue is located and at least 10 people using machines and force are seen knocking it down. The fall of Hugo Chávez caused excitement and shouts from the attendees.
Demonstrators, mostly young, throw stones and shells at police who try to undermine the protest. The number of people who march through the streets shouting and banging pots and pans has resulted in a confrontation with the elements at the time when Maduro announces severe measures for those who do not recognize his mandate.
The protesters are considered to be interventionists and will face up to six years in prison for trying to undermine this election. The opposition and those who did not defend the candidate.
Posters and statues are part of the burning in this protest where young citizens have torn down a huge billboard with the face of Maduro and symbols of the country. The opposition insists that it is a fraud to keep the left at the head of this Latin American country.
The echo of pots and pans reverberates incessantly from buildings as thousands of protesters walk through the streets of Caracas inviting residents to join the protest to “defend the country.”
Chavez statues are torn down in different squares
With shouts and hammers, another group of protesters located in Plaza Urdaneta, Calabozo, Venezuela, gathered to overthrow former President Chavez, who also had a dictatorship prior to the arrival of Nicolás Maduro. The attendees accuse repression and imposition, so they continue burning symbols and making noise in the neighborhoods.
