Why Karlin Chan patrols New York City’s Chinatown
A 91-year-old man is thrown on the floor, a woman is robbed in a grocery store and a man is attacked in the middle of the street, footage from security cameras of anti-Asian violence in the US. Karlin Chan has lived in New York City’s Chinatown for over 60 years. He is the founder of the so-called “Chinatown Block Watch”, a neighborhood watch that campaigns for the protection of Asians or Americans with Asian ancestors. He believes acts like this have increased in the United States since it was announced that the coronavirus was coming from China and former President Donald Trump publicly hated Chinese people on multiple occasions. “When the women or seniors went out shopping in the morning, they heard these stories of attacks on Asians, on Chinese. So there was a lot of fear in the neighborhood. So we went out and visibly patrolled the streets around the shops that were open were so that people could see us and not be afraid anymore. ” Chan sees the fact that the new President Joe Biden is campaigning against discrimination against Americans with Asian roots as a positive step. Asians in America have nothing to do with the origin of the virus, he says. The organization “AAPI Hate”, which records anti-Asian motivated acts of violence, counted over 2,800 incidents between March and December of the last few years.
