Everything smiles on Taika Waititi whose Jojo rabbit East
cited six times at the Oscars. On paper, however, it was not easy to sell the story of a blond boy enrolled in the Hitler Youth and of whom Adolf Hitler himself is an imaginary friend. With the force of humor and a few tears, the director nevertheless managed to make people love this work which denounces hatred.
“The Oscars, I believe, says Taika Waititi to 20 minutes. I am New Zealand and in my country we are so used to gaining nothing that we become optimistic by reaction! This humor tinged with gravity is found throughout the filmmaker’s work, from his beginnings in his native country to his consecration in Hollywood.
Juggling emotions
