The first flakes of meteorological autumn have fallen on the peaks of the Hautes-Pyrénées, captured live at the Pic du Midi.
The first flakes of meteorological autumn, a period of a few weeks preceding the real autumn (September 22), are here. With temperatures very close to zero at altitude, some light snowfall was expected this Wednesday in the Pyrenees, around 2800 meters.
And as is often the case, it is thanks to the cameras installed at the Pic du Midi observatory that these first timid flakes of autumn were spotted. Mixed with the rain, they are not enough to sprinkle the emblematic summit of the Hautes-Pyrénées and the neighboring mountains with a light white veil.
This first snowfall comes a month earlier than last year (around October 15), late summer and early fall 2023 having been abnormally warm. On the other hand, snowflakes so early in the season are by no means exceptional since it regularly happens that snow falls at the Peak even in summer.
The meteorological autumn is a “period of transition rich in often violent meteorological phenomena, marking the inexorable progression towards winter”, underlines The Weather Channel. The coming days are expected to be similar, rather humid and with temperatures between 15 and 23 degrees in the Hautes-Pyrénées. From 2800 meters, new (light) snowfalls cannot be ruled out.
