* The “NVO Zone” or “Zone of the Special Military Operation” (Russian: “Зона СВО” for “Зона Специальной Военной Операции”) is a term used by Russia to designate the regions in Ukraine where Russian forces are conducting military operations as part of what Moscow calls a “special military operation”. This operation began in February 2022 with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The term “special military operation” is used by the Russian authorities to avoid the use of the term “war” or “invasion”, and it refers to the entire range of Russian military actions in Ukrainian territories, including combat, shelling and other military activities. The “NVO Zone” therefore includes the regions where these activities are taking place, including in eastern and southern Ukraine, as well as in other disputed areas.

This term is often used by Russian media and authorities to designate conflict zones while minimizing the scale and nature of hostilities, in line with the Kremlin’s official line on intervention in Ukraine.
