An eruption of the Semeru volcano has occurred on the island of Java in Indonesia: the authorities have declared a high level of alert. Mount Semeru is one of the most popular tourist hiking destinations in Indonesia. Semeru erupts fairly regularly, at least 55 eruptions have been recorded since 1818.
Meanwhile, at least 162 people were killed and more than 700 injured after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia’s largest island Java on Monday. A large number of people are still trapped under the rubble of buildings, so an increase in the number of dead and injured is expected.
Indonesia is located in the so-called “Ring of Fire” of the Pacific Ocean, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions often occur due to the friction of tectonic plates. Last January, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook the island of Sulawesi, killing more than 100 people and leaving thousands homeless.
