VIDEO. Trans Kabar – Overseas the 1st

Trans News, rock group maloya, works on an electric reading of the mystical rites of the island of Réunion to develop a music of “trans maloya”. Discover them with this recording of their concert on the stage of the Théâtre de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

Trans Kabar brings traditional Reunionese music to life by lending it captivating rock accents. “Trans” as transversality, for mixtures of sounds and unusual crossings, and “Kabar”, the name of Reunion Island festivals where musicians, dancers and Creole poets meet. This is how this quartet imposes itself in the French musical landscape with its “rock maloya“, the maloya being one of the privileged musical genres of the island of Reunion. The mystic takes a completely different turn with them, their creative universes being directly inspired by Servis Kabaré, ceremony resulting from the rituals of the slaves made to commune with the ancestors through music. Trans Kabar evokes at the same time music, dance, party, “News“being the name of collective celebrations.

The musicians

Jean-Didier Hoareau or Jidé for close friends is the lead voice of the group, he grew up in Sartrouville in France. He rhythms his songs with the kayamb, this traditional percussion of the island of Reunion. But the singer is also the nephew of Danyèl Waro, the cantor of maloya. Stephane Hoareau bears the same surname as Jidé but is not related to him. He is the guitarist of the group. He was born and raised on the intense island. He is particularly fond of Alain Peters, the accursed singer of Reunionese music, and paid tribute to him with his group G! Rafe. It was he who had the idea to electrify the maloya. Theo Girard on double bass and Ianik Tallet on drums complete this quartet of musicians. It is in Paris that this fusional mix of rock and maloya was born.
