La Rochelle international hooker Pierre Bourgarit, seriously injured on Saturday in the left shin against Pau, was taken to hospital where he should undergo surgery, announced one of his coaches Sean Dougall. Just before half-time of the match against Pau won by the Rochelais (49-25), Bourgarit entered the Pau 22-metre area with the ball in his hands before being tackled regularly by his former teammate Rémi Picquette.
On this tackle, the hooker saw his left ankle twist and his shin affected. Taken care of quickly, he left the field a few minutes later, supported by two members of the maritime medical staff, with a medical boot surrounding his ankle and his left shin before being taken to hospital. “He is in a stable condition, he is waiting for news on the operation, confided Sean Dougall, coach in charge of skills at La Rochelle. He is going to have an operation but we don’t know when yet. It’s a real blow for us”.

“He was in great physical condition,” added the Irish coach. “Everyone is sad for him because he is very important to us on and off the pitch. (Manager) Ronan O’Gara said it very well at half-time, we have to continue our momentum from the first half and play for ‘Bourga’.” Last season, Bourgarit had already suffered a serious shoulder injury in mid-January against Leicester which forced him to have an operation and a forced rest for six months, depriving him of the Six Nations Tournament and the final stages of his club in the Champions Cup and Top 14.
