Toon Aerts is back. The 30-year-old cyclo-cross rider won his first race in Valkenburg since February 6, 2022. In the round of the UCI Gravel World Series, he was the best in a sprint with Piotr Havik.
Toon Aerts’ story has already become widespread. A contaminated nutritional supplement resulted in a positive doping test, which resulted in him being suspended for two years. In February this year he made his comeback in the field with two fourth places, in the last race of the season (Oostmalle) he fell and broke his nose.
He has now recovered from the broken nose and that his form is already good, as he showed in Valkenburg during the UCI Gravel World Series. He took his first victory since February 6, 2022, when he won the Krawatencross in Lille. The victory was celebrated in style (see video). Greg Van Avermaet finished sixth in Valkenburg, Jan Bakelants rode to eighth place.
