[Video] Thousands of books will be lost – Local News, Police, about Mexico and the World | The Sun of Tijuana

Cultural promoters begin this Monday a protest against the closure of the municipal public library “Benito Juárez” and the eviction of the gallery of the Institute of Culture (ICBC) in Tijuana by the state government, they denounce that the cultural heritage of more than 36 thousand books, as well as dozens of workshops on photography, English, primary, secondary and high school adult education.

Aída Méndez, a cultural promoter for more than 20 years, said that the state government has not disclosed where the books will be transferred and with that the threat of their being damaged is present.

“More than 36 thousand volumes of books that we do not know where they will go and under what conditions those books will be stored, because as you know, the books have to be stored so that they are not damaged.”

He said that so far the state government has not reported where the more than 36,000 books and furniture will be transferred because it has no idea where the Benito Juárez library and the central offices of the Baja California Institute of Culture will be relocated, the Jaime Bonilla’s decision a setback in education and culture.

“Our disagreement is due to the eviction of the most important library, the Benito Juárez Library, and the eviction of the delegation of the Institute of Culture of Baja California (ICBC), we are losing a gallery, we are losing a space for photography, spaces for dance, spaces for book presentations, braille reading training, care for the blind, story hours, homework and exam help, preparation for the ceneval exam, preparation for English, “said Aída Méndez.

Last Thursday, Governor Jaime Bonilla Valdez, during a day of peace confirmed that the Benito Juárez library will be “relocated”, but there was no certainty, since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador would be asked to give them the post office, located on Calle 11 del Centro, but did not know if the federal Executive would accept the proposal.

During the daily live broadcast, the state president was asked about the relocation of the Benito Juárez municipal library, as well as the gallery and ICBC offices, but the governor did not answer the question and doubts remain about what will happen to the destination of the 36 thousand books and where the educational and cultural spaces will be relocated.

The dismantling of the Benito Juárez library began last Friday, February 19, to enable spaces such as state government offices, after the unilateral decision of Governor Jaime Bonilla Valdez to donate the property where it is currently the seat of the state government to the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC).

The government offices will be delivered on March 18 to begin the cycle of Medicine students in September.

The rector of the UABC, Daniel Valdez Delgadillo, said that they are planning to convert the building into the “University Center for Health Education”, where they will build 20 classrooms, with a capacity for up to 40 students each, it is projected to have the capacity to receive 1,300 students.
