VIDEO. The Toulon diver to the rescue of Guadeloupe’s biodiversity

Sandrine Treyvaud allows damaged or diseased corals to grow back. In Guadeloupe, part of the economy of the islands depends on their presence.

Sandrine Treyvaud is a diver from Toulon who set up the Ocean Quest France association to train volunteers in coral cuttings. Every winter, it operates on the coral reef of Terre-de-Haut, in the archipelago of the Iles Saintes in Guadeloupe. Many young divers come to learn how to take care of nature with her.

This training is a way of giving back to the sea all the pleasure it can give us. It’s also a way of combining business with pleasure, it allows me to be underwater and do something beneficial for the planet.

Because coral suffers both from human activities and from natural disasters such as cyclones. Recovering broken corals, cutting them on rocks and returning them to the bottom of the water allows these microscopic animals to develop again. They are the basis of the balance of fauna.

The coral reef is the nursery but also the pantry of the planet. All the fish come here to feed

Coral is home to 25% of marine biodiversity. On an island where fishing is a central economic activity, its presence is essential to local life.

Coral is good for fishermen. There are lobsters, there are fish and it’s just 10 meters from the house. Unfortunately, there are places where we could not protect them. Thanks to Sandrine, we will have the chance to see this coral reproduce and expand tomorrow. It’s always good to give nature a helping hand.

Since the start of her campaign, Sandrine has already trained 250 volunteers. It does not claim the establishment of the cuttings protocol, but inherited it from the scientists. She just wants to pass on lifesaving gestures to as many people as possible.
