Social media users circulated, on Saturday, a video clip in which the Speaker of the Saudi Shura Council corrected the Speaker of the Jordanian Parliament, interpreting a Quranic verse he cited during his speech and linking it to Iraq.
This was during the session of the thirty-fourth conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union, which was held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, in the presence of the heads of Arab parliaments.
During his speech, the Speaker of the Jordanian Parliament, Ahmed Al-Safadi, mentioned the Quranic verse: “Lord, make this a safe country and provide its people with fruits,” and indicated that this supplication is for the Prophet Ibrahim and that the intended country is Iraq, in the context of his praise for the country hosting the session.
Immediately after Al-Safadi’s speech ended, the Speaker of the Shura Council in Saudi Arabia, Abdullah Al-Sheikh, asked for clarification from the chairman of the session, Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Muhammad Al-Halbousi.
Al-Sheikh explained that the country in the verse mentioned by Al-Safadi is Makkah Al-Mukarramah.
Al-Sheikh accurately mentioned other places in the Holy Qur’an in which similar verses were mentioned, and all of them refer to the word “the country” to Makkah Al-Mukarramah.
