The word lake is of Slavic origin, and scientists named the crater because there was a lake here in the past. The Delta River flowed into it. The crater was named in 2007 by the Astronomical Union, which traditionally gives places in space after the terrestrial ones. Twelve years later, NASA’s director of Mars Discovery wrote a letter to the mayor of Lake confirming the connection.

NASA hopes that the $ 2.7 billion mission will be able to discover new geological knowledge about the planet and possibly its original microscopic life.
