The four French swimmers were on a par with the Chinese and American favourites for a long time on Sunday, but finally climbed onto the third step of the podium and thus offered a fifth Olympic medal to Léon Marchand.
If a testimony of the French density in swimming was needed, here it is. Behind the quadruple Olympic champion Léon Marchand, the men’s 4x100m medley relay team won the bronze medal on Sunday, August 4 at Paris La Défense Arena. Led by the enormous work of Maxime Grousset (best time in butterfly, 49″57), Florent Manaudou finally cracked in the last length in front of the world record holder Pan Zhanle, China winning gold, and the American Hunter Armstrong, who took silver.
Yohann Ndoye-Brouard, who started the backstroke relay, won his first Olympic medal, as did Maxime Grousset. It was the fifth for Léon Marchand, and the first that wasn’t gold, while Florent Manaudou took his tally to six. It was also the first podium finish at the Games by a French medley relay in the 21st century.
