On Monday morning, the fire brigade announced that the major fire in South Africa’s parliament building in Cape Town was under control. But now the fire has flared up again. On Monday afternoon, live images showed thick clouds of black smoke over the historic building. Flames blazed from some of the skylights. A fire department spokesman said a cavity under the roof of the National Assembly was on fire. The number of firefighters had previously been reduced. The fire in the Victorian building had broken out early Sunday morning and had spread over much of the building complex. The assembly room of the House of Representatives was completely destroyed, the roof of the old assembly building collapsed. A man was arrested in the course of the investigation. The damage from the fire is estimated at several hundred million euros.
