VIDEO: Slovakian athlete excels at World Championships, advances straight to semi-finals from start

LIMA. Slovak athlete Rebecca Slezáková on under-20 world championships in Lima, she qualified directly from the start to the semi-finals of the junior girls’ 400 m hurdles.

Slezáková finished in the first of six heats in 58.63 seconds, third behind South Africa’s Tumi Ramokgopova (58.04) and American Jasmine Robinson (58.25) and 27 hundredths ahead of fourth place Finnish Essi Niskalova.

Progress to the semi-finals was determined directly by the first three from each heat and the remaining six by time.

Nineteen-year-old Slezáková achieved her second best performance of the season and career at the Estadio Atletico de la Videna in the Peruvian capital, following her personal best of 58.44 from the Slovakian championships there in Banská Bystrica in June.

The semi-finalist of the Junior EC 2023 in Jerusalem was eighth out of 51 starters in the heat stages.

“I was a bit nervous, but I got on. I enjoyed the run, I tried to go as well as I could. I’m happy it turned out like this and I’m looking on to the semi-finals already.

I achieved my goal, a stone fell from my heart,” said Slezáková for the website of the Slovak Athletic Association.

The junior women’s 400m football semi-final is scheduled for Friday at 10:35pm CET.

Slezáková is waiting for her second discipline at the championship on Thursday, at 16.21 SELČ, together with Tereza Čorejová, she will stand at the beginning of the 100 m hurdles.

Seventeen-year-old Gymerská finished fifth in her 400 m heat with a time of 55.01 s.

Already at the finish line, she knew that a performance of 65 hundredths from her personal record would not be enough to advance to the semi-finals.

Among the top 24, the first three from each heat qualified directly, and six more times.

The finalist of the July EC under 18 in Banská Bystrica was already after his IV. she started 11th down the line and eventually the other female competitors pushed her three places lower.

Overall, in a competition of 52 contestants, she was ranked 32nd.
