In the Ukrainian-controlled Donbass there is a small city called New York. It is a few kilometers from the front. Artillery war is raging around them. New York was first mentioned in the mid-19th century. The town was founded by German Mennonites. One of the legends that should explain the name says that the woman came from one of the German settlers in the United States.

In the days of brutal dictator Stalin, the name met with resistance, not wanting a city resembling the capitalist financial center of the overseas enemy class. New York was then renamed “Neustadt” in Russian. Only in 2021 did the Ukrainian parliament decide to return the village to its original name.

Before the war, New York had approximately 12,000 residents, few of whom remain now. Our war reporter Kurt Pelda with the video report from the Ukrainian city of New York.
