Dr. Muhammad al-Mahdi, professor of psychiatry at Al-Azhar University, confirmed that there are scientific statistics and in-depth studies that have confirmed an increase in narcissistic symptoms among social media users.

He said: “Studies have found that people who take too many selfies or who regularly change their profiles have clear narcissistic traits, and a distinction needs to be made between narcissism as a disease and narcissistic traits that may appear in certain behaviors.”

He said: “A narcissist is someone who feels too important, needs flattery and praise, and thinks he deserves special treatment. He is also very sensitive to criticism and he can’t take any criticism.”

Dr. Al-Mahdi spoke about the different types of narcissism, saying: “There is simple narcissism, which is represented by excessive respect for oneself without harming others, and productive narcissism, where the narcissist trying to succeed to prove his worth they are also creative narcissists who stand out through their achievements in art and science.”

He pointed out that “popular narcissism focuses on personal image and social status, while fragile narcissism is characterized by violent responses to criticism, and malignant narcissism includes traits such as suspicion and tyranny or psychopathic behavior such as lying and cheating. “
