Video probably shows part of the crime – new details

The knife attack in Solingen has shocked Germany. Now there are new details about the crime and the arrest of the suspect.

One week after the knife attack in Solingen, new details have emerged. According to information from “Spiegel”, investigators have a video showing part of the attack. The news magazine also reports that the suspected attacker, Issa al-Hassan, is said to have scouted out the situation at the crime scene, the Fronhof in Solingen, shortly before the attack. He is then said to have deliberately attacked participants at the city’s 650th anniversary celebrations by stabbing them in the neck and upper body.

According to the report, the attack lasted only a few seconds before al-Hassan fled and hid in the city center. It was only around 24 hours after the attack that investigators were able to arrest the 26-year-old Syrian.

The “Spiegel” also writes that al-Hassan was not arrested in his refugee accommodation, as initially reported, but in Solingen city center. According to the report, a police patrol noticed the man when he emerged from a hedge, still covered in blood and drenched. In the suspect’s accommodation, investigators found a seven-piece knife set, one of which was missing – a carving knife with a 15-centimeter-long blade. This is believed to be the murder weapon.

A week ago, three people were killed and eight others were injured, some seriously, in a knife attack at a city festival in Solingen. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the suspect for murder and suspected membership of the terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS), among other things. The suspect came to Germany via Bulgaria at the end of 2022. He was supposed to be transferred to Bulgaria under EU asylum rules. However, this did not happen because the man was not found on the scheduled day in June 2023.
