[VIDEO] Princess Diana as a ghost? Even before its broadcast, the last season of “The Crown” on the death of Lady Di is already causing a scandal

End clap for The Crown. The final season of the hit series arrives Thursday, December 16 on Netflix. And for the latter, fans of the British crown are probably holding their breath. The phenomenon series on the reign of Elizabeth II addresses for this sixth season the hot topic of the death of Princess Diana.

A major event which shook the monarchy like never before and whose story has been awaited by spectators since the launch of the “soap” in 2016. Five episodes are put online on Thursday then the last five, on December 14, thus concluding this biopic on the now late Queen Elizabeth II, from her marriage to Philip in 1947 until the arrival of Kate Middleton, the current Princess of Wales, in the early 2000s.

“Key moment” of the series

The epilogue of the hit Netflix series chronicles the last weeks of Princess Diana’s life, after her turbulent divorce from the current King Charles III and until her death on August 31, 1997. Chased by paparazzi, the sedan carrying Lady Di crashed into a pillar in the Alma tunnel in Paris, killing the 36-year-old princess and her new love, wealthy Egyptian heir Dodi Al-Fayed. The Queen was then slow to react to the immense popular emotion aroused by the disappearance of the one whom Tony Blair nicknamed the “people’s princess” and the royal family took years to overcome this trauma. “You have finally managed to turn everything around in this house. It’s nothing short of a revolution,” the queen says to the princess, played by Elizabeth Debicki, in the trailer.

“This is a very sensitive subject to deal with because it was such an important event in the life of the monarchy and the royal family and people connected to Diana are still alive, including her two now-adult sons William and Harry”, notes Ed Owens, historian specializing in the monarchy. “This is the key moment that the series has been preparing for since the first season,” he assures.

Friend of celebrities and media figure, Diana had forged global popularity by displaying her empathy with the most deprived. Extremely popular during her lifetime, she remains the object of immense admiration beyond the United Kingdom, and her memory tarnishes the image of the new King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla, who never succeeded to completely annihilate her reputation as a marriage wrecker.

Princess Diana as a ghost?

Over the sixty hours of the multi-award winning series created by Peter Morgan, there have been numerous criticisms of the historical inaccuracies recounted, while the Netflix show reaches a young audience and often constitutes a first introduction to the events, told for the first time. This sixth season is therefore as much awaited by fans as it is feared by those close to the British royal family, the latter having always taken care never to express themselves on the program.

And even before its broadcast, this last season is already making some people cringe. Rumors of Lady Di appearing as a ghost have sparked accusations of disrespect, according to revelations from the Telegraph. This is far from being the first time that “The Crown” has come under fire from critics, especially since the series reaches Netflix’s young audience who are discovering certain events recounted for the first time. Over the seasons, the series has been accused of having suggested infidelities of the queen and her husband Philip, of having shown the current king as a fickle husband or even of having attributed to Charles the desire to see his mother abdicate in the 1990s. The platform finally decided last year to add a warning specifying that it was fiction.

Annie Sulzberger, who led the documentary research for the series, assured in the New York Times that she was aware of discussing a very sensitive subject with Diana: “With recent history, we are constantly confronted with the intimate and personal details of the spectators.
