A giant walrus was spotted this weekend on rocks on the island of Valentia, off the west coast of Ireland, latitudes too far away for this arctic species.
The large marine mammal caught the attention of islander Alan Houlihan and his five-year-old daughter Muireann as they walked on a beach on the island of Kerry on Sunday.
“He came out of the water onto the rocks and gave us a bit of a show”, story the man speaking to the Irish Examiner. Houlihan adds that at first, and until he saw its fangs, he thought that the “huge” creature — of the size “of a bull or a cow”– It was a seal.
Houlihan sent images of the walrus to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG), which estimates that it is a young adult, although it notes that it is not possible to determine its gender, since both males and females have tusks.
