Party leader Meuthen resigns from the AfD

AfD boss Jörg Meuthen has left the party. The 60-year-old confirmed this to several ARD broadcasters on Friday. The heart of the party beats very far to the right today, said Meuthen in justification. Parts of the AfD are “not on the ground of the free democratic basic order”. He sees “clearly totalitarian echoes” there. As party leader with his commitment to a different path, he failed. The AfD has developed something akin to a sect, especially when it comes to corona policy. The co-party leader Tino Chrupalla in a first statement: “First of all, it was of course very surprising for us. Of course, it was also a tough week for Jörg Meuthen this week. He also had the vote on the AfD’s candidate for federal president, also with all state chairmen, clearly lost. We had a clear majority there. The state chairmen also gave him a clean slate there. And then, of course, the lifting of immunity, which was also added to that. That’s why I’m already a bit worried far surprised, but maybe not in the speed now.” Meuthen has been one of two national spokespersons for the right-wing populist party since July 2015. He had recently come under pressure because of a party donation scandal. The Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament has therefore voted to lift his immunity. Meuthen has been an MEP and deputy chairman of the Identity and Democracy parliamentary group since the end of 2017.
