VIDEO: Naum Shopov and His Wife Compare Supermarket Experiences in Dubai and Sofia, Revealing Which Location Had Saltier Options

A large part of the products that both of them buy are imported, with the difference that those in our country come from the EU, and in Dubai from much further away places

The host of the show “The Bachelor” Naum Shopov and his partner Thea Minkova did an experiment on their YouTube channel, in an attempt to buy similar products and services, as those they buy in Sofia and in Dubai, in order to compare the prices in the two countries.

The United Arab Emirates is an oil-producing country with a high standard of living. The country is the 7th largest in the world by GDP.

For the experiment, the two shopped in large supermarkets in Sofia and Dubai, bTV informs.

A large part of the products that they both buy are imported, with the difference that those in our country come from the EU, and in Dubai from much further away.

Their market includes: 1 kg. cucumbers, 1 kg. fresh potatoes, bread, eggs, cheese, cheese, mozzarella, butter, minced meat, ketchup, detergent, fabric softener, coffee and toothpaste.

The price in Dubai for this basket is BGN 233.35, and in Sofia the same products are BGN 200.43. The difference is exactly BGN 32.92 cheaper in favor of Bulgaria.

“This is quite interesting given the big difference between salaries in Bulgaria and the United Arab Emirates,” says Naum Shopov.

His check showed that the most common salary in the UAE is AED 99,173 per year. One dirham is about BGN 0.50, which means that approximately in Dubai people take about BGN 50,000 per year. For comparison, the average salary in Bulgaria is about BGN 2,000 thousand.

“The price of coffee beans surprised me, because in Bulgaria its price is BGN 45, and in Dubai – BGN 60. And the other thing that surprised me is the toothpaste, because the most ordinary toothpaste there costs BGN 14, and in Bulgaria, the price is BGN 6.29, which is a huge difference. Mozzarella from the same brand in Bulgaria is BGN 3.29, and there it is about BGN 6. For some things, the difference is double, and for food it is tangible.” says Thea.

The two pay BGN 50 for parking for a day near one of the beaches.

“Every 10th citizen there is a millionaire, which is quite scandalous,” adds Nahum.

The surprise for the two comes in the expensive fuels, because their expectations for this product, which is literally “digging in their backyard”, turns out to be not at all cheap or the one in Bulgaria is quite expensive…

One liter of gasoline in Dubai is about 3 dirhams or BGN 1.50. Gasoline in Bulgaria is BGN 2.60 and the difference is not that big.
