The demonstration of support for Brigitte Barèges, former mayor of Montauban, following her conviction by the Toulouse judicial court, gathered nearly a thousand people, this Saturday, February 13, in the streets of her city.
They were nearly a thousand, this Saturday, February 13 in the afternoon, to come to show their support for Brigitte Barèges, former mayor of the city, after her conviction by the judicial court of Toulouse to five years of ineligibility with provisional execution.
After a quick speech by Marie-Claude Berly, now president of SIRTOMAD, the demonstrators strolled in the streets of the city center, in silence.
At the end of the march, some Montalbanese elected officials showed their support for Brigitte Barèges, as did the mayor of Béziers, Robert Ménard, before a few words from the now ex-mayor of Montauban: “See you very soon, I hope. Au goodbye … not goodbye “.
The demonstrators then sang a “Marseillaise” then chanted “Brigitte” to applause.
Speeches during the demonstration
Brigitte Barèges : “I don’t think I realize yet, she confided to us during the stroll. I am not dishonest. I live this story very badly but I am comforted by your support which gives me the courage to get up. Monday, there will be a great void. But this support today comforts me (…) I will take a step back and I will be at the disposal of elected officials. ”
Michel Weil, Mayor of Montbeton, Grand Montauban: “We have been able to work beyond our differences for the good of our municipalities. During these years, we have had the unequaled support of Brigitte Barèges. We wish her return to business.”
Robert Ménard, mayor of Béziers “came as a friend”: “It is normal to be there alongside Brigitte, out of friendship to denounce the arbitrariness that must challenge elected officials.”
Solal Gea, youngest municipal councilor of Montauban: “We respect all institutions and justice but we say our total incomprehension. We have confidence in justice and we believe in the presumption of innocence. I cannot imagine that we cannot call you Madam Mayor. “
Brigitte Barèges is officially no longer mayor
It was a necessary step. It has been confirmed. The prefect of Tarn-et-Garonne, who had no choice, took an official decree, dated February 11, “bearing the automatic resignation of Madame Brigitte Barèges from her mandate as municipal councilor of Montauban, of councilor community of the agglomeration community of Grand Montauban and her mandate as departmental councilor “, at the end of which Brigitte Barèges is declared to have resigned automatically.
The decree was served on Brigitte Barèges and published in the collection of administrative acts of the prefecture. It is therefore Axel de Labriolle who became interim mayor of Montauban while waiting to become so completely during the next municipal council, the date of which has not yet been set but which could take place on February 25 or 26.
