Grant Wahl was stopped on November 21 by security personnel in Qatar because, he explained on Twitter, he wore a rainbow shirt at the match between the United States and Wales, to support LGBT+ rights. In Qatar, same-sex relationships are criminalized.

A few hours after the announcement of his death, Éric Wahl, brother of the journalist, reported a murder in tears on social media. “My name is Eric Wahl. I’m Grant Wahl’s brother,” he explains to the camera. I’m gay and that’s why he wore the rainbow shirt to the World Cup. My brother was healthy. He told me he had been threatened. I am convinced that my brother is not dead as they say, but that he was murdered. I suffer a lot.”
