It looks like a big beaver and seeing it swimming in the city waters can be surprising. A nutria was filmed on Sunday 13 November 2022 while taking a dip in the Rhone near Gerland park (Lyon 7).

It was a resident of the neighborhood who met this graceful specimen while strolling in front of the Musée des Confluences at the end of the afternoon. If the captured video can soften, the presence of this animal is still considered as a danger to humans and their environment.

A species declared harmful

The nutria, a mammal that loves freshwater areas, causes a lot of damage to biodiversity, but also to the banks and embankments in which it digs holes. It also represents a risk for humans, because this small animal can be its vector transmission of leptospirosisa bacterial disease.

It has been classified as a weed species for many years. In Lyon, verse is especially present the Confluence district. Area within which eradication operations are regularly carried out.

17 coypu killed in March 2022

Until March 2022, 17 coypu had been bow-hunted to the order of the Municipality, believing that the proliferation of the animal had reached a critical stage and that it represented an excessive risk.

The ecological municipality was then targeted by criticism, especially those of animal advocates, who had called the operation a “massacre”.
