The trial began in June and took place in camera. Lawyers were required to sign for non-disclosure of the secrecy of the investigation.
Cihanouskim was charged with four articles of the penal code: organizing and preparing riots, grossly disrupting public order, obstructing the right to vote and inciting hatred.
On the day of the verdict, Cihanouska, who is considered by the Belarusian opposition and the West to be the winner of the 2020 presidential election, published a statement in the Telegram app.
“A year, 20, 100 years – it’s illegal, it’s not something you can accept,” Cihanouska said. “Therefore, in commenting on this so-called judgment, I will ask myself only one question – what will I do with this message? I will continue to defend the people I love who have become the leader of millions of Belarusians. ”
Syarhei Cihanouskis was arrested on May 29, 2020, when he collected signatures for the nomination of Sviatlan Cihanouska as president.
His own nomination was blocked by the Central Election Commission. Cihanouskis was placed under administrative arrest and was unable to register his initiative group.
