An unexpected consequence of the coronavirus epidemic in New York: cycling is experiencing a resurgence in popularity there. Faced with the thousands of confirmed cases in the United States, Mayor Bill de Blasio has listed a series of actions to be adopted to prevent the spread of the epidemic. Among them, one that New Yorkers seem to have taken to heart: the use of the bicycle to get to work. Thus, the number of bicycles using the bridges connecting Brooklyn and Queens to Manhattan has increased by 50% compared to March 2019.
A trend favored by the coronavirus epidemic?
The trend doesn’t seem to be just for those who already own a bike. Citi Bike, the city’s leading self-service bicycle provider, said that compared to the same period last year, trips using its bikes increased 67%. If these figures are also explained by the mild temperatures of March 2020 and a growing number of self-service bicycles, the epidemic seems to have been a major trigger.
The day after Bill de Blasio’s press conference, 7,178 cyclists took the Williamsburg Bridge compared to 5,192 a week before, an increase of 38%.
