“Job, sleep, vault”. Slogans flourished at Ferns in the procession against the pension reform. After the success of the mobilization of January 19 (1500 people in Fougères), the inter-union CGT, CFDT, FO, FSU, Solidaires and CNT called for a second rally, Tuesday January 31. About 2,000 demonstrators (2,500 according to the unions, 2,000 according to the police) were present in the city center. “It’s more than the last time,” says a participant.
In the procession, working people, retirees, but also young people, especially high school students, mobilized.
If he had not come to the first meeting, Claude, retired for a few years, wanted to participate in the second in Fougères.
I come to defend my retirement. I touch 1000€, my wife too and we tighten our belts. 1200€ gross, I don’t want it. I want 1200€ net after 43 and a half years of work.
The trade unions have expressed their grievances against the reform and refuse to raise the retirement age to 64 years. “On all public finances, State and Social Security, the effect of the decline in age depends on its macroeconomic consequences, explains the CFDT. However, these consequences are controversial. In the short term, between five and ten years, it is not certain that postponing the age will reduce the need for financing”.
The CGT describes this reform as “unfair”, “retrograde” and “which will make us work longer without increasing our pensions”.
“It is obvious that with this government, we do not have the same project for work, adds the FSU. Progress is not retirement for those who can and it is not to reduce the rights of the unemployed”.
After the speeches, a parade was organized in the city center of Fougères. Other events are planned for the next few days. The local unions have warned: “the mobilization is likely to be long over time”.
