Since the morning, police cars have temporarily blocked one of the entrances to Pasaj Unirii in order to install beacons in the area where the work is starting. Motorists are outraged by the works for the future pre-signaling gates, which they consider unnecessary.
– „Damn me, now it’s half an hour until I pass Piata Unirii. Instead of putting up a limited gauge sign, let’s put up gates”.
– „They are much heavier than they used to be. Let it fall into our heads, that they have signals everywhere, even further in front and on the asphalt. If they don’t look, it’s the driver’s fault”.
In the first stage, the lanes in the middle of Dimitrie Cantemir boulevard are blocked, so that a square will be installed in which the new presignaling and gauge gates will be supported.
The machines started to make the first excavations. Until the end of the works, traffic in the passage area will be partially blocked.
Additional pre-signaling gates will be installed at both entrances to the Unirii passage, equipped with vehicle height measurement sensors, chains, video cameras and LED information panels.
Eugen Ionescu, road safety engineer: „As usual, first a misfortune has to happen and then the necessary measures are taken.
I wish there were some trials to see how it works. Moreover, if after passing the first obstacle and the signal is given and the registration number also appears, there is a possibility for that man to get out of that route and go to the collector road”.
After the completion of the rehabilitation works last summer, several accidents occurred at Pasajul Unirii. The worst was in December, when a Greek tourist lost his life. According to the City Hall of Sector 4, the new gauge gates will also be made of metal and will stop cars taller than 3.5 meters.
Cătălin Codescu, president of the Traffic Accident Victims Association: „That goalpost, no matter how they design it, by hitting it must not amplify the damage and the risk that the event in question will have particularly serious consequences.
We have seen that gauge gate do nothing but come off on impact and increase the risk of both significant property damage and especially personal injury and death.”.
The work on the pre-signaling systems costs 4 million lei and must be finished on March 30.
