The stakes are high since it is the penultimate stage of the circuit. Also, each nation wants to garner a maximum of points in the standings. And that means qualifying for the Cup. In pool A, and thanks to victories over Canada and Japan, England had validated their ticket for the main tournament. At the time of facing Argentina, the English did not have much to play for, unlike the Argentines who needed a victory to qualify.
