New Delhi. Germany’s Digital and Transport Minister Volker Wissing was also very impressed with the digital payment app i.e. Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in India. In fact, the German minister himself had come to buy vegetables on Sunday. He bought vegetables from a small shop and paid through UPI from his mobile.
Regarding this, the German Embassy in India on Sunday praised India’s digital infrastructure on X (formerly Twitter) and described it as one of the country’s success stories.
The German Embassy in India posted videos and pictures of Volker Wiesing, in which he is seen buying groceries and using UPI to make payments. The caption of the post reads, ‘One of the success stories of India is digital infrastructure. UPI enables everyone to transact in seconds. Millions of Indians use it. Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Wissing @Wissing was able to experience the simplicity of UPI payments and is very excited about it!’

Volker Wissing had come to Bengaluru on 19th August to participate in the meeting of digital ministers of G-20 countries. Reacting to the post, social media users thanked him for being a part of India’s digital economic revolution. One user wrote, ‘Thank you for being a part of India’s digital economic revolution. Keep sharing and using it.
Many reactions came on social media
Another user wrote, ‘This will be a gift for German traders and shopkeepers in Germany, who are struggling with only cash transactions. ‘UPI goes global! When is Germany joining the UPI platform?’ Notably, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is the fast payment system of India. It provides the facility of making payments to the customers instantly round the clock. It uses Virtual Payment Address (VPA) created by the customer.
These countries have participated
So far, Sri Lanka, France, UAE and Singapore have partnered with India on emerging fintech and payment solutions. Earlier in July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India and France have agreed to use the UPI payment mechanism.
