Hi-Fi Rush: Bethesda and Microsoft surprise is “a dream game” for its creator!

Announced by surprise and published in the wake of its release on January 24, Hi-Fi Rush caused quite a stir after its introduction at Microsoft_Direct. The Tango GameWorks game is a true “dream game” for its creator, a project he has wanted to realize for many years.

A much older project than it seems

It’s the big surprise of the new year: Bethesda and Microsoft just released Hi-fi fevera kind of beat’em all that mixes action and rhythm with a colorful cel-shaded universe. This little nugget has made a small splash and is once again a great exclusive for Microsoft.

Integrated directly into the Game Pass offering, Hi-Fi Rush could have had a completely different fate according to the statements of its creator and director John Johanas.‘ In a recent interview, the director who works at Tango Gameworks says that the project had originally been released long before Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda in 2017. In fact, the game could have had a version for PS4 and PS5, before Heading over to the Xbox stable.

It was like 2017. I know people say “oh you did that for Game Pass”, but that was way before (Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda). – John Johanas.

Hi-Fi Rush: Bethesda and Microsoft surprise is

a dream game

For John Johanas, Hi-Fi Rush is a dream project, almost a miracle in his words. The title not only has little to do with Bethesda’s DNA, but also moves away from the usual productions of Tango Gameworks, known for its terrifying games such as The Evil Within or Ghostwire Tokyo.

It’s one of those (…) dream games, that I wanted to do for a long time. I had just finished working on The Evil Within 2, and we (Tango Gameworks) had already made two horror games in a row. We knew that Ghostwire Tokyo was in production; it was the next game we were going to do. (…) It was the “minus Bethesda” game I could think of, and it was going to be a real ride… but I had this idea.

A risky but profitable bet Hi-Fi Rush is currently a hit on Steam, surpassing the big releases of the moment. Whether Microsoft will have more surprise releases in the future remains to be seen, but the approach seems to have paid off.
