VIDEO. Football: the Blues Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembélé accused of anti-Asian racism

the essential
A video posted on social media shows the two internationals appearing to make fun of people of Japanese descent.

The facts would go back to the summer of 2019, during a tour of Japan with FC Barcelona.

Friday evening July 2, a video is revealed on social networks, featuring Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembélé, two of the French internationals from the Catalan club. They are in a hotel room, with several people of Asian origin near them, seeming to intervene in the repair or the connections of a television and a game console.

We hear a voice, probably that of Ousmane Dembélé filming the scene: “All those dirty faces to play PES, my brother.” And to continue: “Oh p … the language! So, are you ahead or you are not ahead in your country?”, The technicians obviously having difficulty in making the equipment work. Beside, Antoine Griezmann smiles.

The video provoked many reactions on the social network Twitter.

These users have thus made emerge, via their numerous publications, the keyword #StopAsianHate and the episode begins to feed the Asian press: “Several versions of the video accompanied by Japanese subtitles were shared on the Internet”, specifies the South China Morning Post quoted by International mail. The technicians there would be identified as Japanese. The South China Morning Post reminds that, moreover, FC Barcelona has been sponsored since 2016 by the Japanese online commerce giant Rakuten. “The contract is reportedly worth $ 64 million per year and is due to end at the end of the 2020/21 season but the club have put an option to extend it for another season.”

For the time being, neither Antoine Griezmann nor Ousmane Dembélé have reacted to the broadcast of this video.
