After several break-in matches, the British and Irish Lions have finally crossed swords with the Springboks. We believed during a good part of this first shock that only the scorers would be at the party. Pollard thus accommodated four penalties in the first act against only one for Biggar. The Welshman having failed in the 35th just like Daly just before the Lemons. But upon resumption, Cowan-Dickie scored the tour’s first attempt on a carried ball. An achievement that had the merit of launching this match. A fine offshore action led by du Toit saw de Klerk scoring a try with a bit of luck following play off Mapimpi.
It was once believed that du Toit had made a forward, but Mapimpi recovered the leather behind before the scrum-half grabbed his hands to score opportunistically in the 49th. Before the waltz of the changes, Biggar allowed the visitors to take back control with two kicks in quick succession and a third after the hour mark. Pollard missed the boat in the 64th and thus left the Lions in the lead. Which acquired their victory on a final penalty from Farrell in the 78th for a final score of 22 to 17.
If the scorers were in sight, a man also shone in this part, Maro Itoje. The Englishman was voted man of the match.
