“With tablets like the iPad, there is also the fact that the apps can often be operated with a stylus like the Apple Pencil, which enables the clips to be edited very precisely,” explains Sébastien Bonset from the digital magazine “t3n”.
Bonset mentions Filmorago as an example of a successful free video editing app for Android. In addition to iMovie, he also recommends the paid app Luma Fusion for iOS devices – and for Mac users it also recommends Final Cut Pro, which has a one-off cost of around 330 euros.
Free editing software is also available
Markus Valley recommends two free programs as editing software for the computer, which are available for Windows as well as Mac and Linux: the simple Openshot and the more professional Shotcut.
The Adobe Premiere program is widespread, but can only be used as a subscription model. “The tool is also not intuitive,” says the expert. Adobe Elements, which is purchased once, is better overall here.
Florian Soll, video producer at Heise Medien, has another Adobe tip: “Premiere Rush is not free either, but it has the advantage that it looks the same on the smartphone as it does on the computer.”

For anyone who wants to get into video editing more seriously, the experts recommend Davinci Resolve. The basic version is free of charge and runs on Mac, Linux and PC. “The version is enough to make a movie,” says Markus Valley, “but it is quite complex for beginners.”
Beginners can find help to get started in courses or in tutorials on the program of their choice or on cutting techniques in general. Florian Soll also advises using different techniques over and over again and, for example, using YouTube videos to work further in the software.
Practice makes perfect at video editing
Successful video editing requires patience and a feeling for the right effect and the right music, says Rainer Schuldt. “Practice makes perfect.” Beginners who are too impatient to work would hardly achieve satisfactory results. Before you start editing, you should come up with some kind of script.
Then: “View all of the video material,” advises Bonset. Which scenes should be used? How long should the excerpts last? Less is almost always more: “You really should only choose the very best clips for your project.”

Cutting is like a puzzle, says Markus Valley. You shorten and sort clips and try to put them together into a coherent whole. Then there are the transitions. “It looks nice when you cut in while moving,” explains Valley. So the cut is less noticeable than with a dissolve.
Florian Soll advises beginners in particular not to lose sight of the tone. It is important, for example, to keep the volume at the same level and avoid noise. It is also advisable to separate the audio from the video in the video editing program.
First the sound, then the cut
Then particularly beautiful effects like this are possible: First the sound, then the re-cut. “You pull the sound track a little wider, so you lengthen it, and put some of the sound under the last picture before the new picture follows,” explains Markus Valley.
Many programs come with “royalty-free” music for acoustic background. Valley suggests to all those who want to use this kind of music to keep the original sound and mix it in gently so that the sound doesn’t seem too sterile overall.

“The music has to correspond to the scene,” advises Rainer Schuldt. For example, if you underlay a calm landscape shot with loud techno, you destroy the scene and make it implausible.
In general, the experts warn against using too many effects, fonts or prefabricated transitions. Because that often looks rather unprofessional, distracts from the actual film and can quickly destroy the atmosphere.
