Video. Diams confides in Brut: “Normally, I am dead”

And these are very strong words spoken by Mélanie, a young woman very different from the rapper Diam’s.

“I don’t deny my past (as a singer, editor’s note) because that’s what makes me who I am today. But it is clear that I am a miracle”, she answers Augustin Trappenard who asks her if she is “a survivor”. Converted to Islam and having found “peace thanks to this inner journey” which saved her, Diam’s continues: “Me, normally, I am dead. If I had stayed like that at that time… When I say that I wanted to end my life (in the documentary Salam, Editor’s note), that’s what I wanted to do […] At this point in my life, I tell myself that my death is preferable to what I live. »

Calmed, Mélanie returns little to this career “which no longer belongs to her”. “I am a spectator,” she says. “I no longer live with people’s eyes. It’s not my concern. What matters is that I am at peace with myself”.

A trailer unveiled on Wednesday

This is one of the events of this 75th Cannes Film Festival. More than ten years after leaving the music scene, ex-rapper Mélanie Diam’s is back in the spotlight thanks to the documentary, which she co-directed alongside Houda Benyamina and Anne Cissé, and which is screened at Cannes this Thursday, May 26, out of official competition.
