Lightness in the midst of a pandemic. You have certainly been familiar with the computer-generated images of the virus that have been circulating everywhere for over a year and a half, but you have probably never heard it… sing. Dr Gilbert Deray, doctor at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital (Paris), presented on LCI the song of the Covid. To achieve this unusual and unexpected achievement, scientists have analyzed the structure of SARS-CoV-2, and in particular the spicules that allow the virus to cling to the body of an infected person.

“MIT researchers [Institut de technologie du Massachusetts, NDLR] associated every element of the Covid-19 structure with musical notes “, explains Gilbert Deray (see video at the top of this article). “The interactions between these elements give musical layers and lead to the music we hear”, continues the doctor. “It lasts for two hours!”
An interest in medical research
Surprising at first glance, this sweet melody nevertheless has real medical and scientific interests. “With artificial intelligence, if you put all of this in computers, you can compare this music with other melodies” from different coronaviruses, continues Gilbert Deray. This helps to find the similarities between viruses, because “our aptitude to appraise sounds is much superior to our visual aptitude”. This development also makes it possible to improve drug research.

Nevertheless, “even if the music of the Covid is soothing and sympathetic”, the virus remains “mean and devious”, recalls Gilbert Deray. And in the face of this threat, “get vaccinated”, concludes the doctor.
