VIDEO. Covid-19: a lamp to kill viruses in the air, made in Brittany

It looks like a lamp like any other. And yet, a slight hum escapes from the LOD’Air. South of Rennes, at Grand-Fougeray, the company LOD Protect, has developed a lamp that purifies the air. “The air is 99% disinfected from viruses and bacteria, and 95% in the case of Covid-19, explains Olivier Moyen, the creator.

Disinfect the air with UV

The principle of this patented technology is as follows: « l with light, with UV-C, disinfects the air “, indicates with Olivier Moyen.

But be careful, it is not the light emanating from the lamp that kills viruses. Inside the object, the company has developed an LOD, “Light of Disinfection” (“light of disinfection” in French. At one end of the light equipment, the air is sucked in, then passes in a tunnel, equipped with this famous technology, it then emerges on the other side, disinfected in almost all of its viruses and bacteria, thanks to the UV-C emitted by the LOD.

Olivier Moyen popularizes: “UV-C has long been used to purify water. They have short wavelengths, which do not cross the ozone layer. Viruses do not know how to protect themselves from them ”.

The device has been certified by a French laboratory, to ensure that the UV-C present inside the lamp does not risk filtering out and dazzling users.

Turn on the light to kill viruses

The light of the lamp, which illuminates, comes from an LED. “The LOD is integrated with a device that shines, the light, so that its use comes within use”.

In fact, with this product, by turning on the light, the air disinfection is launched. “Depending on the model, it takes around 1 hour to disinfect a room of 15 to 35 m2”. However, it is also possible to disinfect the air without turning on the light, or turning on the light, without disinfecting.

For the reopening of restaurants?

The company offers several models, such as suspended neon lights, recessed, to be installed on a desk, ceiling lights, tiles, but also vertical lamps. Each device costs between 700 and 977 €. “We are not saying that this technology will replace barrier gestures, health protocols, assures Olivier Moyen. On the other hand, it can come in addition. It is, for example, an additional measure which could allow the reopening of certain places, such as restaurants ”.
