VIDEO: Confrontation in Mexico leaves 14 dead, including alleged criminals from the ‘Familia Michoacana’

A confrontation between alleged criminals and residents of the state of Mexico left 14 dead, most of them alleged members of the Familia Michoacana criminal group, in addition to four people injured, authorities reported.

“We have a report of 14 deceased people, of which 11 are possible members of a criminal group and three are residents of the area.” This is what Andrés Andrade Téllez, Secretary of Security of the state of Mexico, detailed in a statement.

The events occurred on Friday afternoon at the municipality of Texcaltitlán. This after residents of the community confronted alleged members of the criminal group.

According to the local press, the confrontation arose after the residents reported that they were extorted by individuals who identified themselves as members of said criminal group, who demanded payments for each square meter of planting.

Faced with this situation, the inhabitants organized themselves to confront the criminals, which led to the confrontation.

Videos circulated on social networks showing moments before the confrontation. Dozens of residents are in a sports field and it is observed how they verbally confront the alleged criminals, who were armed.

At some point, shots begin to be heard. Although some people fall to the ground, others pounce on the alleged criminals and start a fistfight.

According to the Secretariat of Security of the state of Mexico, after the events, elements of the state police, the Secretariat of National Defense and the National Guard were deployed to the scene, in addition to the fact that the Attorney General’s Office of the state of Mexico will begin with investigations.

The Familia Michoacana is one of the criminal groups in Mexico that fight with blood and fire for the control of the production and trafficking of drugs such as marijuana and methamphetamine. In addition, activities such as extortion of merchants, kidnapping and theft of trucks.

The events occur after Mexico reported an annual drop of 7.1% in homicides in 2022, when it recorded 30,968 murders after the two most violent years in its history, under the mandate of President Andrés López Obrador: 34,690 fatalities in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020, followed by 33,308 in 2021.
